2008-11-25 - BIONETICS 2008

Conference: BIONETICS 2008
3rd International Conference on Bio-Inspired Models of Network, Information, and Computing Systems
Date: November 25-28, 2008
Deadline: 01.07.2008
Location: Hyogo, Japan

______________________
Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of heavily networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet scale down to micro- and nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally unsupervised way.

A fundamental research challenge is the design of robust decentralized computing systems capable of operating under changing environments and noisy input, and yet exhibit the desired behaviour and response time, under constraints such as energy consumption, size, and processing power. These systems should be able to adapt and learn how to react to unforeseen scenarios as well as to display properties comparable to social entities.

Biological systems are able to handle many of these challenges with an elegance and efficiency still far beyond current human artifacts. Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems. The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical solutions which have similar high stability and efficiency as biological entities often have.

The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering where bio-inspired methods are investigated.

2007-06-12 - WOSIS 2007

Workshop: WOSIS 2007
5th International Workshop on Security in Information Systems
Date: 12. - 13. June 2007
Deadline: 19.02.2007
Location: Funchal, Madeira - Portugal

______________________
In conjunction with the 9th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS 2007)

Co-Chairs
Dr. Mariemma Yagüe
University of Málaga
Spain
yague@lcc.uma.es

Dr. Eduardo Fernández-Medina
University of Castilla-La Mancha
Spain
Eduardo.FdezMedina@uclm.es

Background and Goals
Information Systems Security is one of the most pressing challenges facing all kind of organizations today. Although many companies have discovered how critical information is to the success of their business or operations, very few have managed to be effective in keeping their information safe, in avoiding unauthorized access, preventing intrusions, stopping secret information disclosure, etc.
Nowadays, rapid technological advances are stimulating a greater use of information systems in organizations world-wide, which handle large quantities of data, managed by huge databases and datawarehouses. In addition, information systems quite frequently manage information that can be considered sensitive, since it is related to certain intimate or personal aspects of persons (beliefs, medical data, sexual tendencies, etc.) and which must be specially protected.
Many organizations, including not only companies but also governments of several countries, are now realizing how security problems can affect both business success and citizen rights, and they are proposing security policies, security planning, personal data protection laws, etc.
All of these, including technological, legislative, ethical and political factors, justifies the importance of secure information systems, and encourage us to research in new techniques, models and methodologies, which could aid designers developing and implanting safe information systems which both protect information and keep within the law.
In some sense, standards are always present in many security areas: Cryptographic protocols are standardized, and web services security are based on standard specifications; Biometric security needs different standards, and risk management can be performed following standards. In fact, there are many people working in security standards development, and many other people are working in using, adapting, extending and redefining these standards.
In this new edition of WOSIS, the traditional information systems security will be maintained but taking into account standards in the field and we will add some general topics concerning the standardisation process, or their impact on the marketplace. Our objective is WOSIS 2007 will present new developments, lessons learned from real world cases, and would provide the exchange of ideas and discussion on all the expert areas CS&I.

Smart cards, or, by extension, smart devices with their processing power and their direct relation to the user are considered to be the first choice. In rather young andnew realms, such as RFID and pervasive computing in general, smart cards and devices face new challenges. Today, the capabilities of smart cards and devices with their highly advanced specialized security features reach far beyond the role of secure tokens.
They are the basis for many secure systems and play a decisive role in ID management. Established computer science areas, like hardware design, operating systems, modeling systems, cryptography or distributed systems have adapted to this fast growing technology to yield new application ranges and investigate emerging challenges in the smart card domain.
In 2001 "Computer Networks" devoted a special issue to smart cards (vol. 36, no. 4, July 2001). The present special issue is expected to appear six years later (Summer 2007). It will concentrate on new developments, applications and challenges that have appeared in these last years in connection with smart cards and similar devices.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR PAPERS: June 30, 2006
Completion of 1st round of reviews: Sep. 15, 2006
Revised versions due: Oct. 31, 2006
Completion of 2nd round of reviews: Dec. 15, 2006
Final accepted manuscripts due: Jan. 15, 2007
Planned publication: Summer 2007

---------------------------------------
Special Issue Guest Editors
---------------------------------------
Guest Editor:
Josep Domingo-Ferrer, Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona, Catalonia
Guest Co-Editors:
Joachim Posegga, Universitaet Hamburg
Francesc Sebe, Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona
Vicenc Torra, IIIA-CSIC, Barcelona

2006-04-28 - DistTrust

Workshop: DistTrust

Date: DistTrust Workshop
Location: Barcelona, Spain

______________________
The DistTrust Workshop will take place on April 28 (Friday), after Infocom 2006 (April 25-27, 2006).Meetings will be hosted at the UPC (http://www.upc.edu/) premises.

This workshop aims at bringing together a number of projects that face similar challenges when implementing security in a context of open, heterogeneous and dynamic networks. These are European Commission funded projects, partly funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Unit, and partly by the ICT for Trust and Security Unit.

The state of the art in this area is centred on static network topologies, while it is clear that this is becoming increasingly dynamic. Mobility of nodes and code, resource sharing, distributed computation and services, ad-hoc networking and opportunistic forwarding, all have in common that they can no longer rely on placing tight perimeters around fixed structures, nor on a central authority that controls access and transactions. Key aspects in the projects mentioned below are the dynamicity of the network and the distributed nature of services. Under these conditions, where the concepts of location and identity are becoming separate, it is no longer possible to assume that one authority would have knowledge of every node or device in the network, let alone be able to guarantee all the actions that device takes when it is used as a resource or provides a service. Four of the projects involved are from the FET proactive initiative Situated and Autonomic Communication (SAC): ANA, BIONETS, CASCADAS and HAGGLE. These work in the area of new paradigms for communication/networking systems that can be characterised as situated (i.e. reacting locally on environment and context changes), autonomously controlled, self-organising, radically distributed, technology independent and scale-free.

The goal of the workshop is to foster synergies, avoid duplication, and exploit common approaches across these projects.

Conference: ISAS 2005
International Service Availability Symposium 2005
Date: 25. - 26. April 2005
Location: Berlin, Germany

______________________
The interconnection of computing entities and the increasing interplay of hardware, software and middleware is making computers transcend far beyond the classical notion of ‘systems’ to the wider ranging ‘services’ oriented computing. The issues of design, composition, availability, responsiveness, analysis, security and many others are basic challenges to be thought out for provision of services and the service providing infrastructures.
Topics: All areas of service oriented computing are solicited, covering the following themes, but not limited to:

* Description of services – publication, discovery, selection, binding, behavior
* Availability standards for service implementation, certification, support
* Availability issues in open service platforms
* Composition – specification, coordination, conformance, monitoring, QoS
* Service fault models, semantics – detection, recovery, responsiveness
* Dependable service composability – functional, operational
* Service infrastructures – hardware, software, middleware, networks
* Service development, analysis, testing - models, environments, tools
* Service requirement – availability, deployment, upgrades
* Service management – certification, rating, service agreements, support
* Interfaces for service implementers – usability, security and availability
* Existing products and their availability features (services under development, deployed services, infrastructure)
* Application examples with strict service availability requirements
Conference: SPC 2005
2nd International Conference on Security in Pervasive Computing
Date: 6. - 8. April 2005
Location: Boppard, Germany

______________________
The ongoing shrinking of computing facilities to small and mobile devices like handhelds, portables or even wearable computers will enhance an ubiquitous information processing. The basic paradigm of such a pervasive computing is the combination of strongly decentralized and distributed computing with the help of diversified devices allowing for spontaneous connectivity. Computers will become invisible to the users awareness and exchange of information between devices will effectively defy users control.

Assuming a broad application of powerful tools and effective ways to use them the quality of every day life will be strongly influenced by the dependability of the new technology. Information stored, processed, and transmitted by the various devices is one of the most critical resources. Threats exploiting vulnerabilities of new kinds of user interfaces, displays, operating systems, networks, and wireless communications will cause new risks of loosing confidentiality, integrity, privacy, and availability. Can these risks be reduced by technical countermeasures to an acceptable level or do we have to redefine political and social demands?
