Abstract: A description is given of the development of a model for the simulation of the high-level data link control (HDLC) protocol, which is the standard data-link layer protocol in the open systems interconnection architecture. The architecture is constructed using the PROTOB simulation environment, which allows an object-oriented system description based on a class of colored timed transition Petri nets called Prot nets. The main features of the HDLC protocol are briefly summarized and a quick overview of the features of PROTOB is provided. How PROTOB can be used to model communication protocols is discussed. An outline is presented of the choices that led to the actual implementation of the HDLC protocol model
