Abstract: The main problem in designing, implementing, and using of an expert system is to select the knowledge representation formalism. Most of expert systems apply the rule-based approach. The paper presented deals with another representation means, namely a generalisation of Petri nets and discusses how the rule-based approach can be viewed through the new formalism with all the ensuing consequences.
