Abstract: The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have a Joint Technical Committee (JTC1) for the promulgation of Information Technology Standards. JTC1 is divided into a number of subcommittees (SCs), with SC7 having carriage for Software and Systems Engineering Standards. Working Group (WG)11 of SC7 has been developing standards in the area of Software Engineering Data Description and Representation. One of the standards developed by WG11 (ISO/IEC 15909) is for the specification of distributed and concurrent systems using high-level Petri nets. This standard has now reached the status of a Final Draft International Standard, and hence its technical content is fixed. The final ballot should be held in the middle of 2001. This paper provides the background, scope, justification, current status and future directions of this project.
