Abstract: The paper presents three graphical models for discrete process control: finite automata, algorithmic state machines and Petri nets. The correlation between finite automata and Petri nets is emphasized. The advantages of the Petri nets for concurrent process modelling are presented and control program design by sufficient refinement of the net is illustrated.
