Abstract: A markov model which can be used to quickly assess the performance effects of network interface unit design decisions under a variety of multicomputer workloads, is presented. The model is defined using the generalized stochastic Petri nets (GSPNs), which provide a framework for expressing the behavior of processes communicating over the network interface unit. It is argued that the GSPN model is more realistic and easier to use than previous analytical models of network interface units.
