Abstract: Such important components of a logistic chain as intermodal freight terminals can be suitably modelled as discrete event systems, and then represented via Petri nets (PN). PN allow to describe the synchronization problems among resources, as well as the behaviour in both regular and faulty situations of the terminal itself. The fault detection is performed by monitoring a special class of pn transitions, named synchronization transitions, which represent the beginning of operations requiring more than one resource. The relevant diagnosis and recovery are carried out by running a proper optimization.
