Automatically Generating Natural Language Reports.

Kalita, J.

In: International Journal of Man-Machine Studies, Vol. 30, No. 4, pages 399-423. 1989.

Abstract: The author describes a system which generates natural language status reports. The system has three modules - a rule-based domain knowledge representation module, and elaborate text planning module, and a surface generation module. The knowledge representation module uses a body of production rules which are explicitly sequenced using an augmented Petri net mechanism. A text planning module traverses this network to search for events which need to be mentioned. An available surface generation module is used to produce well-structured textural reports.
