Abstract: The authors describe their experience in developing an expert system for fault diagnosis in a plant electrical network, and in particular outline the methodology chosen for transferring the domain knowledge from the human expert to the knowledge engineer, and translating it into an intermediate representation model. Petri nets are used. This formalism seems to be quite clear and powerful to describe all the processes having an internal dynamics composed of linked and concurrent events.
