Abstract: The paper presents a specification and prototyping language for manufacturing systems. The language is based on high level Petri nets, is object oriented, is graphic with a textual part and supports hierarchical decomposition. It is well suited for the description and simulation of complex, concurrent systems. The methodology supporting the language combines top-down and bottom-up approaches to achieve an executable description of a system starting from an informal document and from well-known objects taken from an application library.

Keywords: prototyping; discrete manufacturing system; high level net; object oriented; hierarchical decomposition.
