Abstract: In this case study, we develop a detailed failure-repair behavior model for the processing sub-system of a heterogenous VAXcluster based multiprocessor system. Stochastic reward nets are used as the formalism to model the behavior of the VAXcluster multiprocessor system. Stochastic reward nets aid in the automated generation and solution of the underlying large and complex Markov chain. Several interesting output measures that characterize the dependability aspects of the VAXcluster system are described and computed. The use of the model in studying various alternative configurations of the VAXcluster system, given a fixed number of processors is also illustrated through an example
