Abstract: A set of extensions to basic Petri net theory which is sufficiently flexible to model most situations described in the literature in an efficient way is described together with an appropriate simulation algorithm. A new simulation environment, PENSE (the petri net simulation environment), based on these concepts is discussed. The new environment is applied to a medium sized industrial application involving the conversion of an existing machine shop to incorporate flexible manufacturing concepts.
