Abstract: ABR services is one of the four main classes of services to be supported by ATM networks to handle data traffic. A key aspect in providing reliability in ABR services is to avoid cell loss. Flow control is one means by which this can be achieved. A number of schemes have been proposed and investigated in the literature. This paper proposes a new scheme, which was arrived at after studying the drawbacks of some of the accepted schemes for ABR flow control and trying to view this problem from a new perspective. This has a more deterministic approach to allocating bandwidth to an ABR call and hence the proposed name. The approach facilitates easy implementation of the flow control using any knowledge based system.
