Abstract: ATM technology was deployed with the intent of seamlessly carrying all traffic types; however, the deployment of multimedia applications on ATM network has been slow. One major reason contributing to this slow pace is the stringent requirements placed by the multimedia services on the end equipment and the network. In this paper, the requirements to support multimedia traffic will be presented. The current set of AAL's will be reviewed with their services for multimedia traffic highlighted. The deficiences and problems of the AAL's for handling multimedia traffic and possible solutions for managing the problems will be discussed.
