Abstract: This paper studies the combination of Petri nets and knowledge-based methodologies for treating the modelling, simulation and control of manufacturing systems. The paper provides a unified survey of the results concerning the merging of these two methodologies with reference to the modelling, simulation and control problems of CIM systems. A critical survey of Petri net models in the CIM framework is also presented, based on their relative merits and applicability. Two particular expert Petri-net systems implemented and used in some illustrative manufacturing systems are described.

Keywords: knowledge-based methodology; computer integrated manufacturing.
