Draft paper, 1999. Available at http://www.wi.uni-muenster.de/is/mitarbeiter/ischut/PN-BPM.pdf.

Abstract: While Petri Nets have their advocating community for over 35 years, they have been playing a relatively minor role in the Business Process Reengineering boom. Apparently, there are wide resentments against Petri Nets in the management domain considering Petri Nets as `too complex' and not adequate for being used in Business Process Modeling. This paper aims to provide a starting point in bridging this gap. It shows general considerations about the adequate use of Petri Nets for Business Process Modeling. Coming from potentials and deficits referring to specific quality aspects of Business Process Modeling and some ideas implemented in the marked leading Event Driven Process Chains several concrete recommendations for modeling business processes with Petri Nets are given.
