Abstract: A new modelling technique for manufacturing systems is proposed in this paper. Models are constructed with functional blocks known from the field of manufacturing. They are automatically translated into a hidden Petri net. Thus, existing powerful analysis techniques and tools can be applied to the model without knowledge of Petri nets. We emphasise the independent modelling of the manufacturing systems structure and the work plans. Numerical analysis or discrete event simulation of the Petri net model allows to evaluate the performance and dependability of a manufacturing system. A simple application example shows the usefulness of the approach.
