Unter dem Begriff "Ontologie" werden in der aktuellen Forschung Ansätze, die sich mit der Modellierung von Weltausschnitten oder "Domänen" beschäftigen, geführt. Stellt eine explizit und formal beschriebene Ontologie ein einheitliches Weltmodell bereit, dann kann diese als gemeinsame Basis für den Austausch von Informationen dienen. Entsprechend werden Ontologien als mögliche Fundamente für die Integration von Informationen aus verschiedenen Datenbanken oder weniger strukturierten Informationsquellen im "Semantic Web" gesehen. Allerdings werden Ontologien auch als "Konzeptualiserungen von Weltausschnitten" verstanden, so dass unterschiedliche Konzeptualisierungen desselben Weltausschnittes auch zu unterschiedlichen Ontologien führen können. In diesem Seminar werden verschiedene Ansätze zur Repräsentation, Verarbeitung und Nutzung von Ontologien vorgestellt und diskutiert. Dabei wird das in der Forschung bestehende breite Spektrum von Themen berücksichtigt.
