Sleeve Notes

Folk has been a consistently strong musical force in the UK with a number of groups since the 1960s upholding the traditions of English and Celtic song with their music. Folk Heartbeat features 16 legendary recordings from some of the foremost UK folk practitioners of the late 60s, 70s and 80s, taken from the superb catalogue of Mooncrest Records.

Mooncrest caught many of folk's top names in their prime, releasing a series of memorable debut albums. We feature here two great tracks from Sandy Denny's first album sessions recorded at London's Saga Studios in 1967, a year before she joined Fairport Convention. Fairport's Ashley Hutchings went on to form Steeleye Span in 1970 and the material here is taken from their first three landmark albums, including an unusual a cappella version of the Buddy Holly classic Rave On. The Steeleye connection continues throughout this collection - Hutchings collaborated with his spouse, Shirley Collins on the 1971 No Roses album, Martin Carthy recorded his Shearwater album soon after leaving the band and Tim Hart and Maddy Prior were recording together for a full four years before joining them.

Ian Matthews enjoyed stints with Fairport Convention and his own band Ian Matthews Southern Comfort before recording a series of solo albums - Bride 1945 comes from the third in the series. Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers only ever recorded one album, a glorious good-time pub rock romp including a terrific version of Louis Jordan's Choo Choo Ch'Boogie. Similarly short-lived, the Kilburn quartet Lick The Tins gained rare reviews for their 1986 album Blind Man on a Flying Horse. We feature the first two singles from it on this collection.
