The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll
[Bob Dylan]
Bob Bylan recorded his song The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll in 1964 for his album The Times They Are A-Changin'. Martin Carthy covered it on his 1998 album Signs of Life. This recording was also included in 2001 on The Carthy Chronicles. Martin Carthy commented in his original recording's sleeve notes:
... It was around that time that Bob Dylan first appeared on the London club scene. When he returned in 1964, he did a couple of TV gigs and a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, which is etched in fire on the memories of all who were there. He, quite simply and very quietly, tore the place apart. During the evening he sang The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and set the place alight. It was proof, if there were needed, of the power of narrative song in the hands of a real master. I don't believe that he has lost any of his power in the intervening years, as a singer or as a writer, and he remains by far the bravest of the lot, prepared to risk everything, including—and maybe especially—his reputation. (What happened, by the way, to William Zanzinger?)
And Christy Moore sang The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll Live in Dublin 2006.
