Dawn of the Day

[Steeleye Span]

Even though Steeleye Span never released Dawn of the Day on any studio album, it was in their live set in around 1991. A concert recording from that time was included on their CD Tonight’s the Night… Live. The place of the recording was not mentioned in the sleeve notes and neither was the song credited. It sounds as it might have been written by Rick Kemp.

Jon Boden sang The Dawn of the Day as the 12 October 2010 entry of his project A Folk Song a Day.

Lyrics

Steeleye Span sing Dawn of the Day

When the dawn of the day is a-breaking
When light beckons you to awakening
When spring is in the air
And the world is fresh and fair
When the dawn of the day is a-breaking

When the noon of the day is a-brightening
When the height of the sky is lightening
Your laughter and your tears
Are the summer of your years
When the noon of the day is a-brightening

When the dusk of the day is a-darkening
When the evening star is starting
In the autumn of your days
Walk gently in your ways
When the dusk of the day is a-darkening

When the end of the day is a-falling
When night time’s rest is a-calling
You can hear the winter mourn
On the long road home
When the end of the day is a-calling

When the height of the sky is a-lightening
Your laughter and your tears
Are the summer of your years
When the noon of the day is a-brightening

When the dusk of the day is a-darkening
When the evening star is a-shining
In the autumn of your days
Grow gentle in your ways
When the dusk of the day is a-darkening

When the end of the day is falling
When night time’s rest is calling
You can hear the winter mourn
On the long road home
When the end of the day is a-falling
