Abstract: This study has grown out of the authors fascination by he Petri net theory application to the modelling and performance evaluation of flexible manufacturing systems. (FMSs).Its objective is to provide an introduction to the Petri net based methods employed in the tasks of FMSs design, operation and control as well as to present an overview of Petri net based computer-aided packages developed for an FMS design, planning scheduling, control and management. This work is intended to serve two purposes. Firstly, it contributes to the problem of automatic generation of real-time control software by providing new, less restrictive methods oriented toward deadlock handling. Secondly, it presents possible industrial implementations of the methods provided, by presentation of the selected computer-aided systems aimed at the automation of real-time logical controller programming, modelling and performance evaluation and real-time dispatching of MFSs.
