Abstract: This is the introduction to the chapter on the subject area Petri Nets and Related Approaches in Engineering. After a short report on experiences in this subject area during the DFG Priority Program we introduce and survey the papers of this chapter. Furthermore, we indicate that the work done in the subject area provided answers to important questions and -- more importantly -- helped to identify the state-of-the-art in the field as well as gaps to be filled by further research and development activities.
