Abstract: This paper proposes Object Petri Nets as an appropriate semantic foundation on which to build an open software engineering environment. The well-established graphical notation for Petri Nets can be readily adapted to the diagrams produced by object-oriented analysis and design methods, as is demonstrated for the work products of the Shlaer-Mellor methodology. The semantics of Object Petri Nets provides the basis for prototyping and code generation. Furthermore, the current implementation style for LOOPN++, a textual language for Object Petri Nets, supports the smooth integration of other software components such as object data stores and networking interfaces.
