Abstract: The last years have seen the development of several computer programs aimed at assessing the availability of systems. These programs are built either on Markov diagrams, or on Monte Carlo simulation. The aim of this paper is to show how system availability can be modelled with Petri nets. The work was initiated on the use of Petri nets to model system availability in 1984. This research was completed in 1986 when the design of the MOCA-RP software package was fully completed.
