Abstract: The paper documents the content of the keynote address for the Third International Workshop on Petri Nets and Performance Models. It is a personal retrospective on Petri net modeling and a personal view of the future. Rather than a recounting of the historical events in chronological order, this retrospective is an attempt to highlight the most significant of those events. To have any chance at projecting into the future, it is necessary to consider the dynamics more than the chronology.
