Abstract: Performance modelling and evaluation play a vital role in the design and operation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs). This paper focuses on modelling FMSs using stochastic models such as Markov and semi-Markov processes, queueing networks, and stochastic Petri nets. The role of these modelling tools is brought out by constructing performance models of simple, illustrative FMS examples. Recent research contributions in this important area and a comparison of the three modelling techniques are presented.

Keywords: performance modelling (of) flexible manufacturing system; Markov process; queueing networks; stochastic net; performance model.
