Abstract: The purpose of this research is to develop a hierarchical production planning and control methodology. This report details planning and control at the shop level. A hybrid open/closed queueing networks model has been developed with closed queueing networks, representing cells, being nodes in an open queueing network representation of the shop. The cell level controller has been extended to an AGV material handling system within the cell to incorporate alternative routing strategies. Timed Petri-nets are utilized to develop a control algorithm and to study the properties of the control design.

Keywords: hierarchical planning (and) control design (for) flexible manufacturing system; hybrid queueing network; automated guided vehicle; routing strategy; timed net.
