Abstract: The paper represents some aspects of the design and experiences of diagnostics as part of the system software of data communication networks. A three-level organized diagnostic system is based on an abstract information exchange network model in terms of Petri nets. This model is briefly described. The authors present an attempt to formalize the transition from conceptual to formal description, aiming at a double goal: to make a convenient procedure for computer-aided design of this kind of system, and to develop a `user-friendly' real-time diagnostic system.
